Pros and Cons of Dating a Friend

You’ve known each other forever and are great friends…and now you think you want more. Before taking the plunge from just friends to being romantically involved, consider these pros and cons: 

Pros

You already know each other. You know their likes, dislikes, and their quirks. You don’t have to go through the awkward first dates and getting to know each other before deciding if you like them.

You trust them. Because you’re friends you already know that you can rely on them and talk to them about anything. You don’t have to worry if they are someone you can count on.

They’ve seen you at your worst and they still like you. You don’t have to pretend to be perfect all the time with your friends, so you’ve already let your guard down around them in a way you wouldn’t normally with someone you just started dating.

You respect each other. You think they’re cool and fun to be around and you value their opinion and they think the same of you. You don’t always get that when you start dating a stranger, and certainly not right away.

Cons

Who will you talk to about your relationship problems? Where you’d normally turn to them as a friend when you need advice, you can’t do that when you need relationship advice and they’re the one you’re dating. You won’t have your friend to talk to when you get into a fight, have problems, or if you breakup.

The possibility of losing the friendship. There’s always a chance that you’ll breakup and you’ll never be able to get your friendship back. It’s a risk that you’ll have to decide if you’re willing to take.

You can easily get too comfortable. When you date a stranger it takes a long time before you get to the point of being “too comfortable” around each other. When you date a friend you are already comfortable with them so this can happen pretty quickly. Be extra diligent in keeping the romance alive so that you can avoid this pitfall. Via
